You can tell if this happens by putting some soil over a dead feeder, food, poop, whatever... in a week or so it will have been broken down entirely by the bacteria. 2 thoughts on “ Zoo Med Eco Earth Bedding Review ” Alexis Johnson August 6, 2014 at 10:51 pm.
This needs to be of sufficient depth, about 50mm or 2 inches is recommended as a minimum. DO NOT use paper towels as their bedding, the only acception is if they are babies and you need to monitor them but they will still need a humid place but paper towels is not something you should use as a permanent substrate! Most people use paper towels without problems. Well, they're actually the same thing, but coco husk isn't ground up into tiny particles likr the eco earth/coconut coir is. But it’s very hard to see mites in an enclosure if you are using a dark-colored substrate, which is why I love using paper towels. Which substrate should I use? I'm surprised at some of the answers that are posted, but then again I am still a newbie. There are 62.3 liters per 2.2 cubic feet, while a brick of Eco-Earth makes 7 to 8 liters. Again, this leads to impaction which is very painful and harmful. This is a good choice as it is very easy to clean and replace.
This wasnt a problem before, but the packaging it came in said specifically to avoid using paper towels due to a fire hazard. I use Eco Earth coco coir I think is how its spelled. Have a good day!
How often do you need to change Eco-Earth, if it all? Yes, sometimes you might see the occasional mites. Plus measuring cost papertowels end up being more expensive over a year. I use Eco Earth coco coir I think is how its spelled. Newspaper is great because there’s no loose pieces that can be ingested and it’s something you will always have on hand to use. One way to keep mites away is to keep the enclosure clean by doing spot checks and by cleaning out the enclosure weekly.
After I remove that layer, I add some more substrate and turn the substrate.

It's great for humid pets. Thanks in advance!Eco earth harbors bacteria, regardless of if you spot clean/take out poop, you need to change at least once a month. He’s been perfectly fine on it so far and I have no plants in there, just his water dish, food dish and hides. All my geckos shed perfectly fine. I'm surprised at some of the answers that are posted, but then again I am still a newbie. A dirty enclosure is just bound to have mites.I’m pretty sure Eco Earth can be used for their full enclosure, I’ve used it for over 2 years now without any problems.Eco earth does not have to be used in high-humidity enclosures.
My gecko is just about a year old and 6 months ago I upgraded him to a bigger tank and changed the eco-earth.
There are other ways to maintain humidity such as wrapping 2-3 sides with shower curtain, lots of live plants, add an extra misting, etc. What about Eco Earth and slate together? I may not change it as often after reading these posts tho! You must log in or register to reply here. I have a Haplopelma vonwirthi and I noticed today that his substrate is still pretty moist. Although, i hope no ones sees me as they'll think im madI'm liking the crowbar idea. I also run a tube into the false bottom so I can drain it if the water gets around1" deep. I just perfer the look. Yes, when water is added it is a very good absorbent and great for rainforest-like environments. I was thinking more of avoiding a soggy moldy mess of harmful bacteria by adding a drainage layer and clean up crew.
However, if you do choose to use repti-carpet as substrate, make sure to replace it as often as the package says too. I change Coopers every 2-3 weeks or so. Leopard gecko substrate should be something easily cleanable and not lose like paper towels or reptile carpet.Hi there, should I keep the enclosure indoor or outdoor? Hope that helps.Seems like I have a fair share of options. When I did straight coco fiber (husk can cause impaction) I changed substrate about every 2 weeks at that age. It just takes some time to establish. You can get a 2.2 cubic ft bale of peat for $7. For humidity, I pour a full glass of water around the tank twice a week, and I lightly mist the tank every day.
