The Losers (a group of kids at this point in the book) go into the sewers and confront Pennywise/It. The sex scene doesn't work today. Someone just post the excerpt of the sewer orgy scene from the IT book. The only way I can think to end this whole thing, as the writer of this column and someone who recently read  I think that’s what King was going for.

For whatever reason, the sex scene in the book It came to my mind  and I decided to search the internet to see if I am the only person to be put off by that part of the book. Bev really is the focal point of all the Losers in this film, not Bill. Something very akin to the sex scene happens at least two other times in the book. You know how wrong this is. She can overpower It in the future because she has engaged in a sex act, whereas It can only kill.The problem here is that the scene presents some uncomfortable realities regarding sex and age.

We don’t remember childhood as well as we think? It would be about whether or not it's problematic enough to ruin the entirety of the book. Let’s start with the idea that we don’t really remember childhood. I enjoyed your analysis of the scene. I'm not weighing in on this being a bad or good thing. Rape of an underage girl by the protagonist is understandably going to turn people off. Find a summary of this and each chapter of It! But the connection there could have been stronger. I thoroughly believe that if this book were written today, this scene would be rewritten if not omitted entirely. By now, the latest adaptation of It has been out for a little bit.

She’s having babies, which is problematic because it’s explained in the book that she’s the polar opposite of The Turtle – she’s not the creator, she’s the destroyer. Even as a young teen, I recall questioning the purpose of the sexual portion of the story   At that point, I assumed he’d  “sold out” and put It in the book in because sex sells. I became a huge fan at age 12 or 13 after reading the Stand (which amazed me!)! Some people will find it intolerable, and the book will be ruined for them because of it. Between the movie adaptations and the book’s title, it’s difficult to prove definitively that this critique didn't exist at the time. The question wouldn't be about whether or not the sex scene is problematic. In the 1950s, Bev’s status as a tomboy and latchkey kid was pretty out of the ordinary, whereas both circumstances were far more normal in the 80s. Bev has more power than It because she is capable of sexual reproduction in the future, and the act changes her from child to something more adult that is capable of both orgasm and child-bearing. One early review seems to say (I haven't seen it yet so I don't know) that (******SPOILER**********) And it's Ben's kiss that brings her back. Totally unqualified, totally unhelpful, totally stupid. That said, it makes some sense in the context of the story: the protagonist, Thomas Covenant, has been a leper for I think 10 years at the point he's translated to a the magical Land wherein he's abruptly cured of the symptoms of his leperousy by a beautiful young woman. It doesn’t have a partner – hell, Bev even refers to sex as “doing it,” which puns the name of the evil force the kids are fighting. Especially when he decides that all of the boys need to sleep with her to be comforted, and she feels that it is her role to give this to them (after, we recall, having a seriously weird father, and what will later be a physically and sexually abusive relationship). This is good. While she’s still virginal, she’s firmly called a slut by other characters, with a cloud of social pariah hanging around her. Even if the sex scene itself isn't taboo to you because it's not real, it's taboo and possibly dangerous because someone created it, committed it to paper, and you're here holding it in your hands. This is bad. Some people will hate it, but like the book in spite of it. Overall, I buy Stephen King’s explanation. For me, yes and no.

King, as a child, Sigh. Maybe King should have found a better way of getting the characters out of the sewers, I got what he was doing with the scene, It's odd what we chose to be outraged about and what we don't. Much like how the adults of Derry refused to see It, we sometimes don’t want to admit that the growing up process includes some uncomfortable truths. This is good. I am greatly looking forward to the 2017 film version. King’s reasons for the scene can be summed up by the explanation of our own resident King analyzer, Dan: “Because cocaine.” Really, you have to be snorting the nose candy to think that including a scene of an 11-year-old girl fucking six of her closest friends in a sewer (Jesus the germs alone are squicking me out) in a novel is a good idea. Bad idea. I guess what I’m saying is that this works on a theoretical level, but I didn't get there as a reader. I HATED the film. King lets everyone live through this sacrifice, allowing Bev to take control and initiate each of the boys into sex together. Most modern critics would find the sex scene problematic. Simply put, two reasons: there are perverts in the world who would be freeze-framing the hell out of this, and the notion still makes us deeply uncomfortable.
